Housing And Jobs For The Homeless
25 July 2003 - 8:00am
HUD and the Department of Labor are teaming up to provide permanent housing and jobs to chronically homeless individuals.
HUD and the Department of Labor recently announced an unprecented partnership to provide jobs and housing to chronically homeless individuals. The $13.5 million dollars will be offered to local employment centers and housing providers "to help chronically homeless persons become less dependent and more self-sufficient." The Department of Labor portion of each grant is designed to "increase and improve employment opportunities for persons with disabilities who are chronically homeless." HUD, meanwhile, will provide approximately $2-3 million in grants to create permanent housing opportunities for the target population.

But why not just require basic accessibility, such as no-step entrances and wider doorways? It seems off the mark to argue that it's inappropriate to place this kind of requirement on homebuilders.
