L.A.'s Sidewalks in Disrepair

With approximately 4,600 miles of sidewalk needing to be repaired and a budget for only about 46 miles per year, L.A.'s sidewalks could take a very long time.

City officials have decided to go ahead with a plan to begin repair of L.A.'s sidewalks. At the budgeted rate, however, the plan could take another century--literally--to finish the repairs. There is currently debate over which areas in Los Angeles will first see some of the $4.9 million for this project. Says councilman Joel Wachs, chairman of the Public Works Committee: "everywhere we've held hearings around the city, it is one of the top complaints of the public." Next step: identify the worst sidewalks in the city.
