Hard Rock stakes its first urban claim in the home city of the blues.
"Chicago's Carbon and Carbide Building, a city landmark treasure at 230 North Michigan Ave., is getting a $90-million facelift and other upgrades in its rebirth as the first urban Hard Rock Hotel... Built in the hard-rocking year 1929 and designed by Daniel and Hubert Burnham, sons of the famous city planner, the building's impressive black granite and dark green terra cotta exterior with gold accents were not enough to attract 21st century office tenants."
