The Opportunity
The Town of Bluffton announces an exciting opportunity for a NEWLY CREATED full-time Senior Planner position in the Department of Growth Management.  Incorporated in 1852 and home to approximately 15,000 residents, Bluffton is located on the banks of the May River and is within close proximity to Hilton Head Island, SC and Savannah, GA.

This is a professional planning position which provides the opportunity to work in a progressive Planning and Community Development Program. The incumbent must possess a high level of skill, technical competence, and knowledge of current practices and trends as well as traditional zoning administration, development review, long-range planning, and plan implementation. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Principal Planner.

The Position
The Senior Planner will assist in the administration and implementation of the Development Review Program, Community Development Program, Capital Improvement Program, and other special projects and programs; help administer subdivision and zoning regulations, and Old Town Historic District; provide staff support to the Town Council, Planning Commission, Historic Preservation Commission; Board of Zoning Appeals and other related Committees; prepare grant applications and administration of grant awards; and a variety of other miscellaneous duties.

Examples of upcoming work assignments include but are not limited to:

  • Assessment and update of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan;
  • Assessment, enhancement, and administration of the Town’s Development Review Program;
  • Administration of recent Grant Awards;
  • Creation and implementation of a Small Home Series/Infill Development Incentive Program; and
  • Administration of Development Agreements.

The Candidate
Highly enthusiastic and technically competent, the candidate must demonstrate excellent writing skills, public speaking, and community awareness.  The incumbent must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, Political Science, Economic Development, Community Development or closely related field; five (5) years of planning/community development experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  AICP Certification is required.  Significant experience with MS Office applications, Adobe software, ArcGIS, and other similar products are desired.
