Mary Irene DeShong Associate or Full Professor of Design and Health
The School of Architecture at the University of Virginia is seeking to fill the new position of Mary Irene DeShong Professorship of Design and Health. The DeShong Professor will contribute intellectual leadership to the University's new cross-disciplinary Center for Design and Health, develop an interdisciplinary curriculum in design and health, and demonstrate a reputation for design excellence. As a key participant in the curriculum, the professor will be expected to teach a range of classes that could encompass lecture courses, seminars, design studios, or other appropriate formats. In addition to teaching, the professor will be expected to mentor students who are interested in design and health issues. The candidate will also demonstrate the potential for leadership as the Center Director.
The ideal candidate shall be a nationally or internationally recognized academician or practitioner with a terminal degree in her/his field and the ability to successfully generate external funding. We are seeking someone who can promote a research agenda to inform and shape future global policies and practice. In this role, the professor will build partnerships across disciplines with leading practitioners, government policy-makers, and fellow academics at the highest levels. Commensurate with these expectations, the successful candidate will be hired as a tenured associate or full professor in a 9-month academic year position to begin August 25, 2013. Nationally prominent reviewers will be expected to confirm the significance of the candidate's contributions to the field.
In filling this distinguished professorship, we seek a scholar and/or practitioner who engages in design solutions that create effective and economically feasible environments for human health by synthesizing the art of design with the rigorous evidence-based perspective of scientific inquiry. These initiatives include patient-centered healthcare facilities, housing, neighborhoods, and cities.
