Planetizen Newswire - Eudora User Notice

5 June 2008 - 7:54am

As of June 2008, the Planetizen Email Newswire is being delivered using the Unicode character encoding system (UTF8), which has become the industry standard for displaying text characters on computers.

While the vast majority of software supports this new standard, the Eudora email client does not natively support UTF8 encoding. Thus, you may encounter problems when using Eudora to view the plain text version of the Planetizen Newswire (Note: the HTML version is not affected).

If you currently use Eudora as your email client, and you would like to receive the plain text version of the Planetizen Email Newswire, we suggest taking one of the following steps.

  1. Install the UTF8 to ISO plug-in (Windows only)
This free, unsupported plug-in will allow Eudora to display UTF-8 encoded messages correctly.
Download the UTF8 to ISO plug-in

  2. Upgrade to Eudora 8 beta
While commercial development and support for Eudora ended in 2006, a new open source version of Eudora based on the Mozilla Thunderbird email client is in a beta (testing) version.
    Download Eudora 8 beta

  3. Switch to another email client
If you are open to switching to a different email program, you may want to explore using one of the following programs.

    Mozilla Thunderbird
    Zimbra Desktop
    Windows Live Mail (Windows)
    Mail (Mac)
