Caltrain: Fees Raised, Service Cut

Caltrain officials are planning to cut midday service by half, raise parking fees by 50 percent, and charge more for the monthly Go Pass.

"The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, which oversees Caltrain, held a public hearing Thursday on the proposals to cut costs and raise revenue.

The board took no action on the $99.4 million budget plan Thursday - that will come later this month or early next month - but voted unanimously to declare a fiscal emergency.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency recently took that step, and AC Transit is set to consider declaring a fiscal emergency later this month.

The financial pain is the result of state cuts and falling fare box and tax revenue."

Caltrain & Tri-Rail (CA & FL)

These 2 commuter rail systems appear alike - both serve 3 counties, and plagued by deficits with no apparent sustainable funding. Tri-Rail was looking to get the legislature to approve a rental car fee in Miami, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, a thought for Caltrain, which has no dedicated funding of its own?

According to the CA Transit Association, "...more than $5 billion in transit funding has been diverted this decade (by Schwarzenegger to balance the state budget), $3 billion in the last two years alone."

First public speaker is a cyclist who mentions the bike bumping problem....leaving potential riders at the station!

While not finalized, it appears that parking fees and "GO passes" will be raised, but not fares. Mid-day service is proposed to be reduced to hourly from 1/2 hourly - perhaps as soon as July.
