Planning a Smart Transit Future in Tampa Bay

With a newly formed regional transit authority, Tampa Bay, Florida, may be ready for a regional transit system. Many want to do it right.

"Did you know that of the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the United States, only Detroit and Tampa do not have transit systems?"

"Now, however, with the newly established Tampa Bay Area Transportation Authority (TBARTA), we have the opportunity - a once in a region's lifetime opportunity - to design a transit system with development in mind."

"Just think about that - creating an integrated system built with transit-oriented development and development-oriented transit as key strategies - one that galvanizes the interests of all those who care about this community including environmentalists, business people, policymakers and the public alike."

Tampa Bay DOES have a public transit system- an (admittedly inadequate) bus system, as well as the Ybor City streetcar.

Perhaps the article meant to say that Tampa Bay does not have a regional RAIL system. If so, the author should have said exactly that; Tampa Bay's existing buses and streetcars, be they ever so humble, are a public transit system.

and Milwaukee

And the author left Milwaukee off the list as a city without a fixed rail system. We have a bus system that our County Executive has tried to ruin by raising rates and/or cutting service every year for the last eight years. But no streetcars, no light-rail, and no heavy rail (except amtrak).

This seems to be exclusively a focus on building or enhancing trunk lines throughout Tampa Bay. There appears to be little "last mile" considerations or, except for yet-to-be-built, transit-oriented development, no belief that the system could or should allow two- and three-driver households to be able to limit themselves to a single vehicle.
