A New Paradigm for Affordable Housing

Via Verde is a unique 222-unit building built in Queens as an experiment in healthy, sustainable and affordable living for low- and moderate-income residents. Txchnologist takes a tour.

Matthew Van Dusen writes that "...as much as the building impresses with its virtue, its appearance is even more striking":

"Via Verde promises urban renewal, with green rooftops for gardens and solar panels that meet 5 percent of the building's electricity load. "This is at the leading edge of social housing in New York and America," said Robert Garneau of Grimshaw Architects, which co-designed the building with Dattner Architects."

Txchnologist has a photo gallery from their recent tour.

Providing sustainable and

Providing sustainable and affordable housing progressively becomes a top priority in the decision-making process of many cities. In Europe, 10 cities like Newcastle or Krakow decided to collaborate to build innovative strategies regarding this issue.
The SUITE project (Housing project: Social and Urban inclusion through housing : http://urbact.eu/en/projects/quality-sustainable-living/suite/our-project/) aims at optimizing a sustainable and affordable supply of housing and to assure social cohesion in all partner cities. This project is run through URBACT (http://urbact.eu/), a European programme focused on sustainable urban development.
