No Cell Phones in Cars, Says LaHood

DOT Secretary Ray LaHood's passion is eliminating the threat of distracted driving from cellphones and texting. Now he's taking it a step further and saying the in the future cellphone scramblers might be mandatory in cars.

LaHood spoke in an interview on MSNBC, quoted by Amon Toor in Switched:

"I think it will be done," LaHood said on Wednesday. "I think the technology is there and I think you're going to see the technology become adaptable in automobiles to disable these cell phones. We need to do a lot more if we're going to save lives."

Can we do this now, please?

Mobile phones have been a public menace since the early 90s to pedestrians, bicyclists, and other motorists.
No one will ever really know how much death and destruction we have tolerated in pursuit of our childish demands for immediacy.

Scramblers could be added to spark plugs, by the way.

Why doesn't the government

Why doesn't the government just pass a law making bad driving illegal?

Problem solved.... next!

Get the Government Off My Back

The government has passed laws to reduce bad driving ever since automobiles became common - for example, speed-limit laws.

Of course, no law is perfectly effective. There are still murders and burglaries, even though we have laws against murder and burglary. Is your reaction a sarcastic: "Why doesn't the government just pass laws making murder and burglary illegal? Problem solved."?

PS: There was a political cartoon a few weeks that summarized the current national mood perfectly. Here are the captions of each of the panels:
--A corporation laid me off.
--A corporation evicted me from my house.
--Corporate cash is corrupting the democratic process.
--I hate the #$%^& government!
