214% More Farmers Markets

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture says that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of farmers markets in the United States, with a 214% increase since 2000.

Bonnie Azab Powell at Grist is happy about the increase, but says that direct-to-consumer food sales such as this still make up only .4% of the total food economy of the U.S.

"Local food has a long way to go before Safeway feels any pain," says Powell.

Mobile farmers

As a kid, before the 1970's, a farmer would drive his truck up our street and stop. He'll then open up the back of his truck and start to sell his produce from his truck, potatoes, carrots, onions, and in season fruits and vegetables. The family later moved out to an newer house but no farmer came by in his truck because of the sprawl where we lived then meant more driving for the farmer.
