This topic has many subjective points. For example, if you work in manufacturing but choose to live in a rural area, it is likely that you will have to travel a distance to work for a manufacturer.

I think part of bridging the commuting gap entails people consciously choosing a lifestyle (this includes where one lives) and career path that complement each other in a way that driving long distances won't be necessary.
