Portland Demoted to America's Second Most Bike-Friendly City

The city of Portland is in a state of shock after being de-throned as America's most bike-friendly city.

Long the number one, Portland has been replaced by Minneapolis in Bicycling Magazine's list of "America's Top 50 Bike-Friendly Cities".

"But. But. What about Portland's booming bike economy and its second-to-none percentage of daily bicycle commuters and its $600 million 2030 Bicycle Plan, envisioning a day when 25 percent of all trips in the city will be made on two wheels? "

Bicycling Magazine

The buzz in the bike community is that this is not a very important ranking. Bicycling Mag is the publication for that segment of the bicycling community that rides on expensive bikes made of exotic materials. It's not really in touch with the emerging urban bicycling scene.

In fact, in a recent survey, Bicycling Magazine ranked 11th among the top ten bicycling magazines. More here:

Oh, wow. People still read Bicycling?

Nonetheless, the comments in the newspaper are the typical hoot. And instructive for understanding the usual suspects.

A colleague of mine thinks

A colleague of mine thinks the "ranking upset" is purely a ploy to generate more conversation about the magazine itself, gain more eyeballs, and sell more magazines.

Like their product reviews, the ranking is hardly scientific.
