US, Canada and Mexico Collaborate on Wilderness Preservation

A new agreement signed this week by all three governments creates an international committee to collaborate on wilderness management.

Last month, Matthew McKinney wrote for Planetizen about the need for regional collaboration on wilderness areas. This new agreement seems to be working in that direction.

From WorldChanging:

"The three nations have long cooperated on wilderness management - programs have straddle the U.S.-Canadian border since 1910 and the U.S.-Mexican border since the 1930s. Yet the memorandum of understanding is the first multinational agreement on wilderness protection, according to Vance Martin, president of the Wild Foundation.

"It's not very easy to do anything internationally, even when the countries are neighbors," Martin said."

Regional cooperation positive

This sounds good. Re Mexican/American relations, the wall is going to have to come down for their to be real ecological wholeness. Mexican/American maquiladora factories will have to be cleaner.

Economic and trade policies between all three countries will have to be based on respect for residents of every country.
