Pay More, Get Faster Service from Planning Dept.

A controversial proposal in the London borough of Barnet would create a fast track for developers who pay more for faster service. Critics say this would create an unfair, two-tiered system, where richer developers get more access to government.

Fairness is only one criticism leveled at the idea by those who are familiar with local planning.

"Robert Klaschka, of London-based practice Markland Klaschka, is also dubious about the real advantages of paying more for the 'superior' service – particularly in Barnet.

He said: 'There isn't any real benefit to paying extra at Barnet because at a political level there is too much incentive for councillors to reject schemes."
